Ewwwww

Well, Devin and I plunked down our hard earned $8.25 to go see Slither last night - and overall, we weren't very impressed. Now, granted, we knew going in that this was not going to be Citizen Kane - but sadly, laughs were few and far between.

I had watched a few clips online, including this one where the slugs creep in on the young girl in the bath tub. Not really a bad scene, not scary in any way, but at least shot with some interesting angles and watching her fry the slug with a curling iron seemed funny.

Yet, the scene played very dry in the theater - even boring.

That is not to say that the film does not have it's humorous points. Watching the original slug mother blow up to gigantor size (whilst eating animal remains and raw flesh) did elicit a few laughs from me. "Just hand me a little piece of that possum over there... I am soooo hungry!" But for every funny line there was two others that missed.

The big winner from the film has to be Nathan Fillion! We all loved him in Serenity and Firefly and here, in the Ben Affleck Phantoms role, he brightens up the entire film. In fact, I would venture to say that is Fillion was not present - the film would be near unwatchable. His sly comments - great comic timing - and raw energy, always made his scenes a ball to watch.

This guy needs starring roles!!

Slither is pretty much a mess of foul language, gross effects, and a pretty lame story. But, add a dash of Fillion, and you have what could become quite the cult classic on DVD! Actually, I wish we would had waited to watch it at home, it would have played far better with a beer and a room of friends to truly enjoy the gore.

Rent it in a few months and tell me what you think.

Big weekend! Got an I-Cubs game to go to, gonna hit 9 holes of golf, bowling tonight, dinner out at Sage (a place in Windsor Heights voted best restaurant in Des Moines) and a new Sopranos to top it all off. YAR!

Yo

I do have to say that I went into the movie expecting nothing. It's not even remotely my type of movie and had it not been for the few funny scenes I saw on the internet I would never have seen it at all, much less in the theater. With that being said I walked out happy that I hadn't completely wasted my $8.25, maybe only $4 of it. Anyway, I had a few good laughs so I won't knock the movie at all. I certainly wouldn't suggest that anyone rush out to see it in the theater. I will probably Netflix it when it hits DVD. Maybe even buy it after it lands in the $5 bin at Walmart(many a foolish movie purchase has been the result of the $5 bin), but past that I'll just have to wait for others to put Firefly cast members in their movies.

Netflixin is the safe way to go.

Somehow I get the feeling no one cares though... Slither must not have been on the top of anybody's to do list.

I still want to see it. It's odd though, this seems like the type of film I would love, and everytime I mention it to people I know they freak out. I mean, actually freak out to the point of going, "I really don't want to talk about it."

Could it really have been that disturbing? I thought it didn't look any worse in the disgusting department than any other horror film that's come out lately.

Damfino said...

It's not that disgusting at all - no Wolf Creek and High Tension and Hills Have Eyes - where people are tortured and mutilated...

that is disgusting.

Kern said...

Yeah, that's why I can't figure out why people are getting so creeped out about it.

Speaking of which, did you ever see Wolf Creek? Was it any good?

Damfino said...

Nah - I am not watching it. I heard there is a 10 minute scene where a woman is tortured and mocked and then finally murdered.

Not my thing anymore.

Kern said...

Wow. That's pretty harsh.

Ah,I meant to tell you that Deep Discount DVD is having a sale on all their Criterion Edition films. So if you're looking to score one or two of those normally expensive beauties, now is the time, my cinephile chum! I may have to buy the Ingmar Bergman Box Set, it's less than fifty bucks!!!

Building-filling guffaw and *damn near* a shart from me, Jed!

I wonder how this new torture/murder genre compares to old stuff like Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox. I remember when I went to see The Beyond at Billy Joes, they had a bunch of grindhouse trailers, including one for Cannibal Ferox. I thought Johnson and Damond Fudge were going to be sick at the table.

On the upside, Cannibal Holocaust has an amazing soundtrack by famed Italian composer Riz Ortolani which for the longest time was not available until a recent reissue.

The theme song itself is beautifully haunting, which is ironic for a horror film about cannibals.

And Hello Flop!

Damfino said...

I have fallen out of interest in the whole grindhouse genre. I did not see The Devil's whatever from Zombie. Been skipping all of the horror stuff out lately (did not see the Saw films).

I did watch that High Tension with Kreitner and I really did not like it. A lot of these films come off soo mean, sooo dark... or just plain sick. I guess I find more interesting films to watch.

Granted, I did pay to see Slither.

Yo, whaddup?!!!

A HUGE TGIF, too!!

Flop - didn't your wife at one time really dig the horror genre?

I remember her giving me guff about liking Jeepers Creepers.

ps: It's not all about shit stained balls. It's about people.

I've heard that movie Brick is pretty interesting. It's opening here this weekend, but I don't think I'll be able to get out to see it.

Kern said...

Sheriff-That was a beautiful sentiment.

FlopTheNuts said...

The wife has and still does dig that awful, stupid, ...

Uh, I mean the horror genre.

Don't know exactly why she would give you a hard time about Jeepers Creepers. Hmmmm... I'll have to ping her about that later.

It's a good thing that opposites attract, because I care very little for the horror genre. Just to show the tip of the iceberg: Jeepers Creepers and Blair Witch = $28 (give or take) and, more importantly, almost 3 hours of my life and I cannot get back!!!!!

Sheriff's "LOUD NOISES!!!" sums it up pretty well for me: that's what I feel like talking about horror movies. They don't scare me, I just don't get 'em.

Interesting. I think I'm part of a dying breed. I still love horror films, quite a bit in fact.

I think I'm going to go on a coffee break.

FlopTheNuts said...

Sorry, should not have made blanket statements earlier.

*Most* horror movies don't scare me. I might get "startled" from the butcher-knife-wielding psychopath jumping from behind the door, but I don't consider that getting/being scared.

I just don't get *most* horror movies.

However, I do like seeing ta-tas in some (all?) of the Jason, Michael, and Freddie flicks. Those are a few exceptions that fall in my "not *most* horror movies" category.

Kern said...

I can understand that. I think in my case I came to the genre really late, and so whereas a lot of people liked it when they were younger, and have kind of moved on to other genres of interest, I'm kind of still catching up on a lot of stuff.

Also, even though I am a total neophyte in terms of my grasp of film crit, I sort of find a lot of the criticism of horror movies really interesting. Granted, there might be a lot of reading into things that aren't there, but for me personally, I think some of the interpretations of some of them are pretty interesting.

Just my humble two cents.

I did watch Dawn of the dead because Trish said it was her favorite movie. Wow she is warped!!! I also remember that she really liked Natural born Killers. Weirdo!!! So flop what are the big plans for the weekend. I get information from you much more easily than I do from my sister.

Kern said...

BC-Which Dawn of The Dead was it? The Romero or the new one?

FlopTheNuts said...

To answer for BC, it's the new Dawn Of The Dead. My wife loves it so much that I was able to give her the DVD as one of her Christmas presents from only me (as opposed to from Ella and I). I can handle the new Dawn Of The Dead - has a nice boinkin' scene at least.

Yes, like BC said, my wife is a bit warped. But, God help me, I love her to death!

Plans for the weekend? Oh, such fun: tomorrow, one of Trish's coworkers is moving, and guess who is helping out? Yep, us: Trish is going to babysit their 2+ year old (don't remember exactly how old she is), and I'm going to do the heavy lifting. Going out of order, tonight is just goofing off (read as: Flop plays with computers), Sunday will be recovering from helping folks move and relaxing (hopefully). So, um, yeah... Doesn't my weekend sound great?!?! Especially when compared to Jed's. *Sigh.*
