Red Six: RIP

On a sad note, let's all take a moment of silence for character actor William Hootkins, best known to us here at the Damfinoblog as Jek Porkins. He died earlier this week of pancreatic cancer.

This time we'll cover you, Porkins...

Oh poor porkins...poor, poor porkins.

Where do you find this stuff Jed and how Ironic is it that Flop brings it up and now he is no longer with us.

FlopTheNuts said...

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That sucks.

He actually did some cool and good stuff (all info from www.imdb.com): video game voiceovers (Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, AWESOME GameCube game; EverQuest II), TV narration and guest appearances (Extreme Machines narration, I've watched on more than 1 occasion; The West Wing appearance); and, of course, movies (I'm not saying whether these are good or bad movies, just movies he's been in - you *might* recognize some of these :) : The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), A River Runs Through It, Batman, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Raiders of the Lost Ark, many more).

He is with the force now.

He'll always be Porkins to me, though.

BC-I will cop to being the one who reported poor Porkins demise. I was on Fark.com last night, and it was one of the submitted headlines. I believe there's an actual article at Ain't It Cool News.com.

Kern said...

Though he seems a tangential note in cinematic history, the death of Porkins signifies something far greater really; the unwhelming response to character actors by our society. Men and women who do their best to bring all of their thespianic power to the fore only to be remembered as, "Oh yeah, that guy. For some reason, I have the sneaking suspicion that when William H. Macy and Phillip Seymour Hoffman die, it is going to sound something like:

"Holy shit, man! That dude from Boogie Nights died!"
"No way, man. Dirk Diggler's dead?"
"No, man. Scotty(or The Camera Man whose wife was fucking everyone!)"
"Aw man, that sucks. That dude was in a lot of shit. I liked that dude."

A sad but probably true glimpse into the end of a character actor's life.

Then again, everyone thinks Abe Vigoda and Don Knotts have been dead for years, and seemed shocked to hear they aren't, so what do I know?

Deit Heimley said...

Don Knotts is alive?!?!

I was sure he was dead!! Isn't he like 150 by now?? He looked old in the 60s!

Sheriff Officer Greg the Bunny said...

How could I not recognize Porkins as a War Deptartment suit in ROtLA!!!

Great scene......

"Work at Tanis proceeding..."
"Acquire head piece staff of RA Professor Ravenwood USA"

great stuff....

Sheriff Officer Greg the Bunny said...

Just saw Flop the Knotts in an episode of Las Vegas on NBC..creepy as ever.

I can't explain why I was watching Las Vegas on NBC...I am full of shame and self loathing. That reminds me I can't miss that again.

I'm expounding a little bit on my earlier sentiments in this thread over on my blog sometime today when I have a break. So intermittently pop around and see if it's done if you like.

FlopTheNuts said...

I agree, Kern.

When I first stumbled upon the Porkins Phenomenon, I was amazed at the list of his appearances on his IMDB.com entry! Batman?! Raiders of the Lost Ark?! Superman IV?! And, the best one, to me: a voice in the Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem GameCube game?!?!?!!!!

One of the cable stations (I can't remember now for the life of me - maybe AMC or IFC?) was/is doing nights of "character actor/actress" movies. (I just spend a few minutes on Google trying to find what I'm talking about with no luck...) Anyway, one example: they had movies with Paul Giamatti one night/weekend. Stuff like that.

Honestly, and unfortunately, though, don't think good ole' Porkins would be one of their featured actors...

FlopTheNuts said...

Bunny: "Flop the Knotts". ROFLMAO!!!

*Wipes tears away and sits back up while holding right side*

OK, OK, I give, Bunny - please elaborate on the "very random, obscure Grinch ref."

And, you can't miss what: Las Vegas or the self loathing? Mmmmmmmmmmmm, self loathing.

Kern said...

Sheriff-While I can't really applaud your watching Las Vegas on purpose in good conscience, I understand that the trio of sirens(Nikki Cox, Vanessa Marcil, and Molly Sims) are most likely the cause for you dashing yourself against the jagged rocks of bad television. Unless it is because of Josh Duhamel, or God help you, James Caan. Then I have no idea what to say.

Sounds like the Sheriff has some Fear and Self Loathing In Las Vegas.

"Goddammit, this is bat country!"

Kern said...

I agree, Flop. Had no idea Hootkins was secretly Porkins the Prolific. I was especially racking the brain about his role in Batman. Many years since I have seen that.

Sheriff Officer Greg the Bunny said...

The Grinch while checking his schedule to see if he could attend the Whooville festival states, and I paraphrase, "5:30pm Jazzersize, 6:30pm Self-Loathing, I can't miss that again!"

From the mind of the Bunny....crazy stuff going on in there.

If a bunny makes a reference in the middle of the blog and nobody gets it, is it really a reference?

Kern said...

Is this a tree and forest thing?

Kern said...

I think it is a reference. Because if we use that method of thinking 95% of what I say to people is meaningless...

FlopTheNuts said...

God DAMN, Bunny!!!!!

Props for the ref and pinning Porkins' (small) Batman role!

And I thought folks were afraid to get inside MY mind... :)

Deit Heimley said...

No. It wasn't a tree and forest thing. It was this line from the movie "Bunny Out" and then I think it popped up again in "Bunny Maddness: Bunny Out 2" I think it was again recycled in "Bunny Takes Des Moines: Bunny Out 3" but by this point the franchise had sort of run out of steam, so pretty much everything was a recycle of something else. It sad too, because I thought BM had a lot of really good sequal potential. I mean I love BO, but if somebody loaned my their BM, I'd put it in my DVD player.

Kern said...

I think if you put a BM in the DVD player you would have a real mess.

Though better to have a BM in the DVD than in your BVD's.

FlopTheNuts said...

Hilarious, Deit! Very nice!

Deit Heimley said...

Actually, I was giving a blow job to this monk while taking a copy of that movie. I don't remember that guy's name though.

Kern said...

You were blowing Monk? Wow, Tony Shaloub is kind of famous at least. Ties into the character actor theme nicely.

Deit Heimley said...

Kern, this was an obscurly worded throwback to our filthy conversation of yesterday.

FlopTheNuts said...

I was just going to say "Not back to scat talk ala the 'Its a shot in the dark...' thread yesterday".

Kern said...

Ohhh...I get it.

Actually, I must have missed something. Which term did I miss?

Kern said...

Ah right.

Kern said...

We could always go back to talking computers again...?

Deit Heimley said...

We could combine our talk of computers and scat and just talk about Macs.

Sheriff Officer Greg the Bunny said...

Better a BM in your DVD then a BM on your CHEST!

the steamer lives!

Kern said...

Deit: Funny on the Macs. Jed would shart himself. If he were here.

FlopTheNuts said...

Pretty soon it's going to be just an OS issue (much less about hardware) re: Mac v. Windows since Mac is going to the Intel processor.

Amend that: Mac v. Windows v. Linux. I gotta admit 'twould be interesting and fun to tripple boot Mac OS, Windows (XP or Vista), and Linux!

Kern said...

That's right, I forgot about that. Well, that being the case, what would you say about the MAC OS vs Windows? I haven't done much with Macs, but everyone I know with one loves them fiercely.

Kern said...

Flop-Also, if Intel is making Mac hardware, will that make them come down in price? I imagine Intel has the mass production thing nailed to a T. I wouldn't mind owning a Mac sometime if I could bloody well afford one, especially since I use Photoshop and art programs so much.

FlopTheNuts said...

I gotta admit, some of the stuff Mac OS can do and that you can do with Mac OS is pretty freakin' sweet. And, usually, to do the same thing in Windows, you have to install something that uses up resources and, again, usually, decreases already-berated system stability. (Or would that be instability? :) )

Take, for example, Mac OS's Expose. The closest thing Windows has *built in* is ALT-TAB. I was able to find some freeware for Windows (XP) that mimics Expose, but it was slow (on the 2 P4 systems I tested it on), and installed itself as a service that used anywhere from 14% to 36% CPU - when "idle"!

But, alas, all I own and use are WIntel boxes... One of those "if I had the money and time" things *sigh*.

FlopTheNuts said...

I don't think it's necessarily Intel making Mac hardware, Apple will just use Intel processors on whatever Intel-compatible mobo (could be an Intel mobo or not).

I didn't think of a possible price drop! That would be sweet!

I know now, with the leaked test version of Mac OS for Intel CPUs, the hackers could basically run Mac OS on just about any Intel-processor-based PC, whether manufactured (Dell, HP) or self-built.

So, in the near future, you may be able to afford to build your own Mac! (I use the tern "near" loosely! :) )

Deit Heimley said...

And we have successfully driven everyone away YET again. It is a true skill that the three of us possess, and I take credit for it too because everyone was having this sweet convo right up until I brought up scat. (sigh)

Such geekiness can only inspire awe

FlopTheNuts said...

Yeah, a combination of scat talk, lunch time, and tech talk seemed to work wonders on this thread. (That makes me think... Hmmmmm... A feces-powered PC?)

It's even Mac-related tech talk and no 'Fino or Bunny to be found!

Huh-huh - plug.
Hee-hee - plug in.
Huh-huh, yeah, he said, "plug in".

Giggity-giggity. Oh!

(Sorry to go 2 different annimated series, there.)

Now, now, Bunny, no one is Mac bashing. I even did some WIntel bashing and said that if I had the scratch and time, I'd like to try out a "pure" Mac!

I'm still dreaming and waiting for the best of all worlds: the hat trick Windows-Mac-Linux boot!

Kern said...

I'd love to have a Mac if I were not a poor working stiff.

Stiff.

Ha ha ha.

By the way, I finished my little piece about character actors over at my blog. Check it out!
