The Plane Boss! The Plane!

In one of the recent threads there was some tattoo talk. In case you were wondering, it was nothing to do with Hervé Villechaize, as much fun as that would have been. So in any case, in honor of Urnotme going to get some ink, I decided to let my own freak flag fly, and show you my body art. Jed may remember actually going with me to get the Gonzo crest tat, as it was my first and I wanted someone to come along and witness the magic.

I know what you must be thinking...what's a square dude like Kern doing with not one, not two, but three tattoos? I don't think I have an adequate answer for that. Though, I am constantly amused when people that first meet me find out, especially when it's people that see me in a coat and tie a lot. Beneath the Burberry lies the heart of a savage, baby! Damn right!

Ahem...uh...so without further ado, here's the tattoos!

Shocked and awed baby. Shocked and awed.

Can you explain them in detail. You said what they were in a previous post, but I guess I didn't really understand.

Kern said...

Sure.

The first one is from the comic book Starman. It's specifically from the Starman Secret Files. There was a map of Opal City, and that picture was up by the legend part of the map. It looks like an Egyptian glyph of a woman and an anubis(a dog like creature) next to her.

The second one is also from Starman. It was a border panel at the bottom of issue 32 or so. It was interesting, because the border decoration was half of the tattoo. When I looked at it, I wondered if I mirrored it, if it would make a contiguous shape. Turns out it did, and it made a knot sort of design, and that's that.

The third one is the Hunter S. Thompson Gonzo Crest. It was my first tat,I was 19 at the time, and I got it to show my deep respect and admiration to the Doc. I've had it for years, and it feels good that I've had it this long, especially in light of his recent suicide. RIP Doc. It's nice to be able to say I had it way back then, so I don't feel like some Johnny Come Lately who only did because he died.

Anyhow, that's the basic story. I can fill in any other details for the curious.

Um... are there now pics of Kern skin on the blog? Has the world gone friggin balls up?

I do remember going with you to get your tat... but I was so high on mescalin and ether that all I remember is that you face melted to the jello green ceiling and the cartoon cat on the wall spoke to me and said "never eat wheat - your blood will stiffen and wrinkles will form."

Very odd experience.

No tatoos for me... similar to what you said - I would never be able to nail down one image or thought that I would stick with for the rest of my life!

Yeah, sorry about that. I was going to put the pics up over at my blog, but since Urnotme was already on here last night, I thought it would just be easier. Plus, I thought it would make for some potentially interesting conversational fodder for the morning.

Deit: I am a fan of both St. Germain and Koop. I have records by both of them on vinyl as a matter of fact. I would tend to say that I enjoy Koop a little more, only because St. Germain feels a little more house music to me. I'm not really a big deep house person myself, but there was something about St. Germain I liked a lot. Also, there is a French trumpet player named Erik Truffaz who is on Blue Note France. He's kind of doing some left field new school type jazz.

Acid jazz is such an interesting genre title, because I think it's been sort of used as a giant umbrella to describe so many different things. A lot of times in my past I have seen people refer to electronic music with a jazzy bent as acid jazz, so in my mind, I have a tendency to have a hard time dissociating the two things. I may actually cover some stuff like that in upcoming reviews.

I also meant to ask if you ever listen to any of the Italian bossa stuff from Nicola Conte and Schema records?

Also, it's interesting that you mentioned not getting a tat partially because of body issues. That's actually one of the reasons I wanted some.

Interesting stuff, Deit. One person just came to mind, and I don't know why the hell I didn't think of him earlier, but DJ Cam is awesome. French DJ, very blunted jazz beats and such. Sounds like it would be your cup of tea, if you haven't already heard it. Also, there are a lot of great things to listen to on the German label Compost. In fact, you probably knew that, since Koop is on Compost, or at least JCR, which is an imprint of said label.

Fauna Flash is pretty good, as is Jazzanova, and though I don't know them very well, there is also Kyoto Jazz Massive. I think that's the name. There's also some great stuff on Ninja Tune records. Herbalizer, DJ Food, Cinematic Orchestra, etc.

Interestingly, I really wanted to find Jed a copy of the Cinematic Orchestra album called Man With A Movie Camera, as I believe it was actually a silent Russian documentary? Jed, can you confirm that? Anyway, Cinematic Orchestra watched the film and basically composed a soundtrack that is supposed to sync up with the film Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz style. I believe they actually released a DVD where it's the film in its entirety with their music overlayed on top. There are definitely some interesting things out there to be sure.

Did you check out the new review at Listen! Listen, etc.? It's about David Axelrod. I think it's one of my best reviews to date. And to answer a lingering question from earlier in the week, my last art project was a mix of digital photo, and lots of work in Photoshop.

Good morning bloggers.

Hey KJ. I take it you saw my ink?

Kern said...

I haven't pooped this morning, but as a rule I love it. It's so cathartic.

By the way Deit, if you want to continue discussions about Euro music, my e-mail is Alexx9811@hotmail.com.

Yes....saw the tatts....nice...I cringe at the thought of more pain though. I nearly passed out during mine so there will be no more inking on my body.

Kern said...

Really? I didn't think they hurt that bad, though I suppose it depends where you get them. Bwah ha ha...

Kern said...

Speaking of poop, does anyone besides Grandmothers use the term BM? It's weird because someone I know also uses the term Commode when talking about toilets. Cracks me up everytime.

Kern said...

I think if this became tat central, Jed would kill me.

I think I've used up my attention whoring quota on the Damfinoblog for the week.

Kern said...

I have to go downstairs to work on a project. I'll be back sporadically throughout the day.

the Kern is gone, daddy, gone

krysta jo said...

My tattoo is on a "need to know" basis only and shown only in person...that makes it "special."

Note the use of extraneous "quotation marks" -- I am feeling really "quoty" today.

Damfino said...

Kern - attention whoring quota is never reached when skin showing is involved.

I prefer the use of BM as opposed to poop.

I am completely messed up by American Psycho... making me edgy and more insane.

I am in desperate need of a massive - obscene - belt buckle for next week. In fact, at this moment, I am depending on KJ for boots.

Josh has his... Greg has his... I am slacking!

Damfino said...

The more I look at his images - the more I think Kern is actually a porn star!

Why must he be so ashamed of his work? And how hott is that couch back there!!!

krysta jo said...

I am working on your boots but it is likely going to take some serious kissing up to Dan in order to secure them. But...that can be arranged.

Stop by Becky's cubicle and quiz her about a buckle. There may be one laying around their house.

Still stopping by around 2:45-3ish. Are you down with that?

Damfino said...

Yo

krysta jo said...

I'll take that as a yes.

Kern said...

Alright, Jed got me. I am indeed a porn star. That is the upside.

The downside is that every show is a monologue. Sometimes it's a haiku, sometimes it's the Declaration of Independence. It all depends on the evening.

I joked with my friends here the other day that I was actually in consideration for the lead role in The 40 Year Old Virgin 2: The Next Generation, which will be released in 2018.

Maybe a different subtitle, however. Like The 40 Year Old Virgin 2: Celibate Harder or The 40 Year Old Virgin 2: The Pathetic-ing

I could see it...
