... more than just nuts and a throb!

There is nothing better than homemade ice cream and the discovery that you are the most inarticulate uncouth jackass around. Yesterday our family did an outing at my father's (he got gift certificates to Mernards... we are very original!) and my grandfather's brother was visiting. I, being the witties and most interesting of the Findlay clan, decided to talk him and up and see what his life has been like.

After discovering he was in Vietnam, I went one huge idiot step further and brought up the whereabouts of his grandson's father (the grandson had come along for the visit)... and of course Glen answered "he's dead."

Silence... then I topped it with "So, like, who takes care of the kid?"

Urnotme stood silently dying of laughter.

Another viewing of Batman Begins this weekend - pretty solid stuff. Some plot points don't add all the way up... but definitely worth your dough. And considering it made only $46 million this wekend (6 mil less than Mr. and Mrs. Smith) we had better get out to see it 3 or 4 more times if we want a sequel.

freaks-and-geeks

Finally, I am one episode away from wrapping up the Freaks and Geeks series. This show is wonderful - full of really interesting characters and tons of hillarious high school moments (and not the cliched garbage you get in the theaters). Rent it... or buy it. Worth every penny (and there is some killer music on the show too!).

Speaking of music, listened to Calexico and Neko Case today... WOW!!! I really dug the Calexico stuff... and there was only 1 tune of Case's that I was not completely into. Way to go Kern!

Thank you, thank you! I'm glad that worked out so well. I'm actually kind of excited about some of the stuff that will be upcoming in that column. I may keep with the theme thing for just a little while longer before I just start throwing things out there.

My question is, did you guys get full albums, or did you just get pieces? If you only got pieces, I can burn you the CDs in their entirity. I am curious, as to which Neko tune didn't strike yr fancy...

Damfino said...

I got only 5 tracks of Calexico and 10 of Neko... but urnnotme is attempting to get the rest (though I would not mind a full quality burn of the Calexico).

I will listen to lyrics on the Neko tonight and let you know which song did not work for me.

Brilliant. I can't wait to work on the column for this week. I think that it should take a lot less time than last week, now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing.

Oh, I also meant to ask you...are there any places to get kegs of import or small batch beers in DM?

Damfino said...

Holy cripes son... I have no idea.

Urnotme might know... but I think he is working.

Good morning all - seems I have dropped into interesting tales of kegs, music and Jed's inability to control his thoughts and comments. Hmmm interesting.

Jed - good to see you this a.m. - it's been a while.

Good weekends everyone?

Damfino said...

Did not drink nearly enough... could use a shot or two of Jack right now.

I also did a little Winick reading of Batman... good stuff.

Kern?

Pretty good. Felt a little sick Saturday night and better part of yesterday. Sour stomach or something.

Spent weekend at the folks. Was the 7th wheel. Ate some interesting donuts. Watched The 4400.

Kern said...

Jed, did you finish Alias already?

Also, have you read 100 Bullets by Azzarello/Risso?

Kern said...

KJ-How was your weekend?

Weekend was good. Spent considerable time with the family. Saw my friend play a hooker in a play. Sister-cuddled with my sister on Sunday.

You know...the usual.

Kern said...

How was your friend in the role? What kind of production was it?

Damfino said...

Kern - did not finish Alias - and have not read the rest.

KJ - I think it is great that you support your friends in their fields of employment... no matter how unusual.

Who deleted a post?

Damfino said...

p.s. - it is nice to see the Sheriff is back on duty

krysta jo said...

She was in the Des Moines Community play - Biloxi Blues. It was a good play - a little long, but interesting nonetheless.

It's definitely not every day that one of your closest friends is an actress and appears in plays, commercials and print advertisements. It's almost like I know a celebrity!!!

Oh and Mel was AMAZING. She's a great actress.

Kern said...

Wonder no more, the deleted post 'twas I. I double posted and couldn't stand looking at such a glaring error for the duration of the thread.

KJ-Sounds like a good time. I used to know a guy up here that would play in musicals nationally when he could get into them. I worked with him here at the law firm. Had a great voice. Great guy...though I had to hide my burning contempt for musicals.

Except for Hedwig.

krysta jo said...

Oh no Alex - you committed the original sin - first double-posting and then deleting the double-post.

1000 lashings with a wet noodle for you.

I enjoy the occasional musical. Just saw the trailer for Rent which is coming to theaters sometime this fall. Very excited about that though I would love to see it on stage first.

I am back but I keep getting hair balls and I have a really strong desire to nail Sarah Silverman...that is what we call in the business a deep cover joke...but the ones who know are having a good giggle...you know what 4 you are...

KJ - Biloxi Blues is a fantastic play (and movie - Broderick and Walken!!) - I read Simon's work when I was younger and this was one of my favorites.

So she played the prosti in the uncomfortable sexual experience... how nice.

Kern - for shame, double posting. Hedwig was nothing short of amazing... I need to see it live!

Sheriff - I thought you wanted to nail Dottie... she will be so hurt that she won't sing the friendship song with you.

A little light, a little dark, a little kosher....its all little to the bunny....

Hey ya'll... I wish I could continue to post from work, but it's frowned upon. I put my thoughts down on the music choices last night, but may have been too much considering my drinks. I do believe I know a place to special order kegs. Seriously. Jed you were killing me yesterday when you were talking to that guy. Killin' me!

urnotme said...

By the way... when Holly and I arrived at your dad's josh asked your grandpa new who I was and you're grandpa was like "uhg yeah" and then josh made a reference to me being his brother in law! WTF. Plus, why did everyone keep mentioning that he was dog sitting? What!?

Kern said...

Urnotme-I'd be interested to hear both your full opinions on the music, as well as info on the special keg thing.

Jed-I bow and scrape due to the unfortunate double post.

Kern said...

Ah, just looked at said opinions on last weeks thread.

I don't really think Neko sounds like Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star, but Rachel Goswell from Mojave 3 does. These are definitely more slow, soundscape-ish types of bands.

There will be some rocking stuff in future columns. We'll have you covered, don't worry.

Damfino said...

Urnotme - I did a little screaming at Josh I last night... I was upset that he kept calling the staying out at mom's a job... and making it a big issue.

Josh II showed up and I was forced to raise my voice... Josh III came out... and I retreated in fear.

Kern... I am itching to get back out to the car and listen to Calexico again... Neko as well.

krysta jo said...

Jed - you need to take kung fu to ward off Josh III. Punch him in the face while you are kicking him in the shin and he'll retreat.

Kern said...

Jed-Sweet! I have some great stuff lined up for the next few installments, but my problem is that some of them may have thematic overlap, and I'm not sure how to present them. Since you mentioned how much you liked Morricone, I have a very special installment along those lines, but for now, it will be a surprise. I'll burn you a full copy of the Black Light if you like. I imagine it's hard to nab the whole album of the machines.

Damfino said...

I can't punch-kick-and think at the same time. In fact, Jerry ties my shoes in the morning (and he has been a real whiner about it lately!!!).

Kern said...

You can do what I did as a kid...get velcro shoes.

I could read by 3, but couldn't tie my shoelaces for the longest time. God, I was a strange child.

Damfino said...

And there was that whole molesting animals thing you went through... poor Catzilla!

Kern said...

Those allegations were untrue. As everyone knows, I've never gotten lucky.

Speaking of Catzilla, Ginger did have to go to the Vet on Saturday because of an ear infection. She also wheezes like she smokes a pack of Luckies a day because of her kitty Asthma.

Back to the kid subject...in all seriousness, I was not much of a troublemaker. My biggest problem was that I talked non-stop. Guess there are some phases one never grows out of...

krysta jo said...

I didn't have hair for over 2 years. That's the best thing I have ever outgrown.

My cat (Stanley) has a hole in his arm. Sad for him.

Kern said...

KJ-A hole? Like a gaping wound that won't heal or what? That is sad.

I want my own cat, but the building management has not previously been very open in that regard. Now that half the units need renting, I wonder what they'll say.

krysta jo said...

His skin is missing completely and you can see his grossness in his arm. But "he's just a farm cat" according to my parents and my almost-vet brother so there's nothing they are going to do for him - just hope it heals. Sad.

My landlords (AKA my parents) won't allow pets but yet my roommate shares a puppy with my brother and at one point we also had a rabbit. I think they mean that I can't have pets. They play favorites...

Kern said...

That's too bad. I miss having a pet around. It's kind of nice to have something to come home to.

I'm jealous, my younger sister just went to pick out her new Scottish Fold kitten yesterday. She brought back digital pics of her. She looks like a real sweetheart. Can't wait to see it in person.
